How do you get there?

In a nutshell: From Athens, take a direct 45-minute flight to Chios and then board the daily, 50-minute car/passenger ferry to Oinousses.

Alternatively,  Hellenic Seaways ferries leave Pireaus (Athens) twice weekly in high season (once weekly in low and shoulder seasons) bound for Oinousses. There are also ferries from Piraeus to Chios with a further connection on the Chios-Oinousses ferry. This might be a better option for people with cars, although cars and scooters can also be rented in nearby Chios. Bear in mind that parking on Oinousses is limited, with some spaces tucked on roads near the house but use is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Oinousses ferry: The local ferry leaves the island at 07h30 or 08h00 (depending on the season), for Chios, and returns from Chios at 13h00 or later, depending on the day and season. The crossing is about €5 and takes 50 minutes. Tickets can be bought at the Sunrise Tours ticket office near the ferry on the Chios side and from the office next to the jetty on the Oinousses side. Weekend schedules vary. Full seasonal schedules are posted online. Sunrise Tours is very prompt in responding to email queries: info@sunrisetours.gr

  • Water taxis: There are several water taxis in Oinousses, available on demand, operating between Oinousses and Langada on Chios' northeast shore. The crossing takes about 15 minutes and costs about €50 one-way, with passengers sharing the cost. Langada is about 25 minutes by taxi (about €25-30) or car from Chios town and the airport.

  • Flights: Aegean/Olympic Air, Astra and Sky Express offer several flights daily from Athens to Chios. Chios airport is about 10 minutes' drive from the Oinousses ferry terminal. Cab fares are posted in the airport terminal but are generally about €7. Check out Aegean Air's schedule here.

  • Hellenic Seaways: Twice weekly during peak summer season, the ferry leaving Piraeus (Athens) stops in Oinousses before continuing to Chios and Lesbos (also called Mytilini). Check out the full schedule here.

  • Boat rentals: Several companies rent boats in Chios.

  • Lesbos, Samos, Ikaria, Psarra: These and other neighbouring islands can be reached by direct flight or ferry from Chios. Several travel companies, including Sunrise Tours, provide information and tickets.

  • Turkey: Daily crossings from Chios to Turkey take under an hour -- exposure to amazing food, antiquities and local crafts. There are several ferry operators with offices on the Chios waterfront.

  • House access: you will be met at the waterfront. The house is a few minutes' walk uphill from there. For about €10, arrangements can be made for a car to collect you.
