The House

Welcome to our 19th century home on the beautiful, unspoilt island of Oinousses in Greece's east Aegean!

The house is located in the heart of the island's only village, Aignoussa,  a mere 5-10 minute walk to beaches, restaurants, shops and the revitalized waterfront.

The accommodation offers simple, stylish living and unparalleled views of the traditional red-tiled homes, sparkling Aegean Sea and dramatic sunsets behind the neighbouring Greek island of Chios

There is much to observe from the comfortable, covered balcony: colourful wood fishing boats setting out for the daily catch; merchant vessels plying the passage between Oinousses and Chios en route to exotic destinations; cruise ships and ferries wending between islands and the Turkish mainland; foreign-flagged private yachts and sailboats maneuvering in the marina; sailing school youth trying  to keep their dinghies in formation; birds soaring and dipping on warm air currents; townsfolk going about their business -- all to the sounds typical of Greek settlements: church bells, roosters, music and scooters.

The main part of the house was built in 1897 by a shipowner couple to accommodate their family of seven children -- which later expanded the family's maritime business interests to Athens, New York and London.  An addition to the house was made in the 1980s. Below the house are the 55 square-metre patio flat and 30 square-metre marble flat.

The house's interior, about 120 square metres (1,300 square feet), is arranged on two floors with white wood beamed ceilings and floors throughout much of the space. It is accessed by an exterior marble staircase, which leads into the hallway, dining room and a connecting lounge with direct access to the balcony. Off the hallway is the fully equipped kitchen, cloakroom, bathroom with shower and two double bedrooms. The larger of these bedrooms boasts a hand-stencilled ceiling and direct access to the balcony. The upper level has a large, double bedroom through which another twin-bedded room is reached. On this level there is also a bathroom with shower and washer/dryer.

The house is comfortably furnished with a mix of antiques and contemporary furniture, framed artwork by regional artists, wool and cotton rugs and decorative items with a nautical theme.
